March 29, 2009:Searching Our Tech World
Two interesting sites that did not fit into the limitations of the newspaper are TouchGraph & Like.com.
Touchgraph does a google search on a topic but instead of just returning a list of sites it creates a graph much like the music sites in the article. If you are searching for a single bit of information a regular Google search is probably a better alternative. But if you want as much information as possible about a subject this is a great tool. For instance a search for 'atomic submarines' resulted in a graph with links to specific subs, classes of subs, arms control, news articles about russian atomic subs and hundreds more. This is perfect for students writing research papers or just finding out all you can about any subject.
Life.com is a product search site but with a difference. Instead of searching by a model number you search by picture. Pick an item like dress shirts. A page comes up with pictures of dress shirts with brand and price. You can limit the search to color, brand, or store. If you are searching for clothes or household goods its an interesting way shop.
